Summit on School Design

National Summit on School Design | November 6 – 8, 2015

The American Architectural Foundation will convene the fourth National Summit on School Design November 6-8th, 2015 in Chicago, IL. This invitation-only event will honor the 75th anniversary of the pivotal Crow Island School. Designed in 1940 by Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Larry Perkins of Perkins, Wheeler & Will, and Winnetka Public Schools Superintendent Carleton Washburne, Crow Island’s student-focused layout challenged assumptions and ideas on school design. It is the only public school in the United States to receive AIA’s prestigious Twenty-Five Year Award.

In recognition of this noteworthy anniversary, we will honor Perkins+Will at the summit with the Design for Learning Leadership and Innovation Award. For over 75 years, Perkins+Will has been a leader in student-centered school design. Their legacy in school design has changed innovative architects’ approach to building schools centered on students and learning.

Experts in architecture, education, technology, and public policy are expected to attend the summit. Over the next two days, attendees will develop strategies to share design’s impact on learning with educators committed to innovation in their schools. Attendees include representatives from Perkins+Will, Princeton University, Steelcase, FGM Architects, DLR Group, UC Berkeley and many other prestigious organizations.

Drawing on AAF’s current work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, decade of experience in school design, and the collective knowledge of attending delegates, participants will explore questions such as:

  • How can we best share design’s impact on learning with other educators?
  • What strategies can progressive architects utilize to continue to emphasize students’ voices?
  • Knowing that learning practices will continue to evolve, how can architects design schools that can adapt to future educational practices?
  • How do we develop a common frame of reference to maximize the potential for a broader reach about design’s impact on learning?
